A new way to remember and celebrate our loved ones who died.

November is the month in which we remember the dead. During this time, we continue to pray for those who have gone before us in faith that they might be embraced by God. At St. Joe’s you have the opportunity to remember your loved ones by:

  • Signing their names in our Book of the Names of the Dead which will be placed at the back of church before each mass, all month long.

  • The week of Oct. 27th through Nov. 3rd bring a memento or photo of your loved ones to place on the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) Parish Altar.

  • All Saints Day Mass – Friday, Nov. 1st at _____ (holy day of obligation).

  • All Souls Day Mass – Saturday, Nov. 2nd at ______ (holy day of obligation).

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a joyous occasion to remember loved ones who died. The holiday is culturally celebrated in Mexico, but has become known worldwide since the 2017 release of the Pixar/Disney movie Coco. The name is a bit misleading, because the festivities last more than one day. They start on Oct. 31st and end on Nov. 2nd. In Mexico, this multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and helping support their spiritual journey. On the recommendation of some of our Hispanic parishioners, our parish is adopting the tradition of the memorial altar to tie in to the Catholic celebration of All Souls Day. It is a great reminder that although we miss and morn the loss of our deceased friends and family, we should also celebrate their lives on Earth and celebrate the great gift of Jesus’s sacrifice that enables them to live on in the light of God’s love.
